5 Signs Your Loved One May Need Help at Home

When someone you love has always been independent, it can be hard to know when they may need a little extra help. Changes often happen gradually, and a loved one may not want to worry the family or feel as though they are giving up control.

As a registered nurse with more than 20 years of experience, I know how important it is to notice changes early and have a respectful conversation about what support might be helpful. Here are five signs to look for.

1. Daily routines are becoming more difficult

You may notice that bathing, dressing, grooming, or getting ready for the day has become challenging. Your loved one might be wearing the same clothes more often or avoiding activities that were once part of their routine.

2. Getting around is harder than it used to be

Difficulty getting out of a chair, walking through the house, or moving safely to and from the bathroom may be a sign that additional support is needed. A recent fall or fear of falling is also a reason to talk with their healthcare provider about safety.

3. Meals and household tasks are being missed

An empty refrigerator, spoiled food, unopened mail, or a home that is becoming harder to maintain can be signs that everyday responsibilities feel overwhelming. Assistance with meal preparation, light housekeeping, and errands may help.

4. They seem more isolated

A loved one may spend more time alone, stop attending activities, or have fewer conversations with friends and family. Companionship and a familiar person to spend time with can make the day feel less lonely.

5. Family caregivers are feeling overwhelmed

Sometimes the sign isn’t a change in your loved one—it’s that you’re exhausted. Balancing work, family, and caregiving can be difficult. Asking for support can give you time to rest and take care of your own needs, too.

Start with a conversation

Needing help doesn’t mean someone has to give up their independence. Start by asking your loved one what feels difficult and what kind of help they would be comfortable receiving. Involving them in the decision can make it easier to find a plan that respects their preferences.
